I feel that Yakuza 7 destroyed the fun in the series' brawler style combat system with turn based style. I think one of the highlights has always been the moves Kiryu learnt gradually from Komaki Sotaro especially the tiger drop move which is a parry and counter for huge damage. I enjoyed learning boss attack pattern, baiting and counter with tiger drop. With Yakuza 6 and Zero, they changed it to quick swap fighting styles and nerfed tiger drop. But then it's still moderately fun. The fast action combat helps in balancing out the dragginess of the long ass cutscenes which can be summarized. I'm forcing myself to platinum Yakuza 7. Played until chapter 7 and I feel burnt out and lacking motivation to continue. Thus I have been working on mini games these few days. Managing a crackers company, playing mahjong and dragon kart racing are way more entertaining then the dull and boring plot, combat. You can change class/job, they are not very interesting and imo the interesting ones are dlcs, 2 for $9+. Max level is 30 per class and you can purchase experience manuals dlcs which can be purchased multiple times. Well this is the trend now, timesavers lols. Levelling class is very slow much more than grinding actual char levels until you unlock colisseum but still need to grind, just at a slightly faster rate. You have the standard normal attacks and skills consisting of buffs, debuffs, healing, revive, mid range attacks, limited aoe, team attacks and thanks for the skip button. It's damn annoying to keep watching the lame team attack cutscenes. Yakuza games have always have players running around in narrow streets and placing quite a fair amount of thugs encounter. With this slow turn based system, it adds on to the agony and frustration from getting constantly interrupted when you are just trying to get to the next checkpoint to advance the already weak plot. Your group of 4 members takes a turn and then enemies turn which can be up to 8 thugs. Your attacks can be interrupted and there goes your party members turn. In past Yakuza games, you can get interrupted too but it's quicker to react since it's brawler style but this you lose one freaking turn and need to wait for 6 to 8 thugs turn to be over. As I have mentioned, narrow streets so most of the time you can't runaway from battle. Once you get into battle, the escape choice also rarely work. But you also wouldn't want to escape, remember levelling is slow lols unless you are a whale. The plot is the usual HK classic triad movies, main protagonist goes to jail for a crime he didn't commit for the sake of his dai lou. Then get mixed up in other pple's business which I called it filler quests. I wish this was a spinoff instead of numbered. I know that if Y8 is still using this turn based combat, I'm done with the Yakuza series. Main protagonist don't have the charisma anyways. Looks like Kiryu char model with different hairstyle, sound like Kiryu but not Kiryu lols. This will be the first one in the series that I will not stack chinese ver and english ver platinum trophy. At least there is still the Y3,4,5 remastered series. And no wonder Y7 is on sale for $50+ in less than 2 months on local psn store. I bought retail version full price $79.90 last week.
